About Dukes Coffee
At Dukes we are uncompromising about coffee quality. We are also very aware that our food system is broken, and view regenerative organic coffee as an agent for change. Our mission is to help ensure a future for coffee, by making the shift to clean, chemical free agriculture.
We are shaped by the people we work with and the way they grow coffee.
We love organic coffee. The stories, the care, the connection to land and community. Our producer partners farm without chemicals because they believe in protecting what’s around them and what comes next.
It’s changed us as people. It’s given us a deeper sense of purpose, and a reason to believe that a better way of doing things is not only possible, but already happening.
We view organic agroforestry farming are the foundation for quality in coffee. This type of small-scale farming is a powerful counterpoint to the chemical-intensive industrial farming system.
Our farmer partners take great care of their land by prioritising soil health, clean water and biodiversity. They farm with nature, not against it, in a way that has a positive impact on their environment, local communities and beyond.
Conventional coffee farms are among the most heavily fertilised agricultural systems in the world. Although coffee grows naturally in diverse, shaded forest environments, most conventional farms today are monocultures with little to no shade and greatly reduced biodiversity.
We want coffee to thrive for generations and for farming communities to see long-term, sustainable development. Organic coffee production is central to making that possible.
We have seen first-hand that when whole communities work together under the guidance of experienced organic agronomists and farmers, the whole community benefits.
More important than focusing on post-harvest processing, there is an immense amount of work to be done by every participant in the coffee supply chain to improve coffee’s agricultural footprint, and that starts by choosing to purchase organic coffee and support organic producers whenever it is available.
Organic agroforestry systems support healthier, more resilient soils and ecosystems, while increasing biodiversity, storing carbon naturally, and helping protect coffee plants from the impacts of a changing climate.
Organic systems usually supply nutrients more slowly than synthetic fertilisers. Coffee grown under diverse agroforestry systems can develop more complex flavors due to higher nutrient density, slower maturation, and stable microclimates.
