Murang’a County is known for its rich red soils, cool climate, and abundance of valleys and streams — perfect conditions for growing coffee. Around 80% of the local population depends on agriculture, and most farmers cultivate less than a hectare of land.

This lot comes from the Gatuya Coffee Factory, one of two washing stations operated by the New Murarandia Farmers Cooperative Society, representing about 3,500 smallholder members. Each farmer typically delivers handpicked ripe cherries from just a fraction of a hectare.

Kenya is renowned for its Washed coffees, and Murang’a is no exception. After careful harvesting, cherries are depulped the same day, fermented for 24–48 hours, washed in fresh water channels, and then soaked again for 12–72 hours — a step unique to Kenya. Finally, the beans are dried on raised beds. This meticulous process produces the hallmark Kenyan profile: bright, clean, and distinct flavours.
