What Industry Beans say

This is the second year we have purchased coffee from Los Tres Potros, with last year featuring the Pacamara variety and this being the first year of the SL28 variety. The farm’s name translates to ‘The Three Colts’, a tribute to the family’s three sons and their shared passion for coffee and horses.

Alongside SL28, the farm cultivates a diverse range of varietals including Pacamara, Cuscatleco, Bourbon, Typica and Geisha. Coffee is grown beneath native shade trees, with organic fertilisation practices and rainwater collection supporting sustainable farming across the estate.

Los Tres Potros has been recognised multiple times in El Salvador’s Cup of Excellence and was awarded the prestigious ‘Presidential Coffee’ title in 2016 with a score above 91 points.

Finca Los Tres Potros is a family-run specialty coffee farm located in El Salvador’s Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range, managed by the Mendez family. Set among volcanic soils in a region with a rich coffee-growing history dating back to the mid-19th century, the farm cultivates its coffee beneath a traditional shade canopy.

SL28 is a varietal that continues to captivate coffee producers and drinkers around the world. Originally developed in Kenya, it is renowned for its expressive fruit character, often showcasing notes of blackcurrant and tropical fruit. It takes on a more delicate expression when grown in El Salvador, offering refined fruit complexity balanced by the region’s signature milk chocolate sweetness.

Brewing Note: We recommend starting with a 1:16.5 ratio and a finer grind, to enhance the coffee’s milk chocolate sweetness. Salvadoran coffees typically have a delicate acidity, and the shorter ratio helps create a sweet, balanced cup while maintaining its fruit character.

The combination of a fruity and complex varietal with terroir-led milk chocolate sweetness.
