This coffee was grown by Joseph Mugo Karaba and Pauline Mumbi Mugo at Kabumbu, their small two-hectare estate in Kirinyaga, Kenya. The farm sits at 1,670 metres above sea level on the slopes of Mt. Kenya, where the cool climate and rich volcanic soils create ideal conditions for coffee. Joseph and Pauline began planting coffee in 2012, alongside tea and other crops, with most of the farm planted to Batian — a variety Joseph chose for its disease resistance, productivity and potential for excellent cup quality.

In 2016, Joseph built a small wet mill on the farm, allowing the family to process and dry their coffee themselves rather than selling fresh coffee cherries through a cooperative. It gives Joseph much greater control over quality, but also over how the coffee is sold and the value they receive for their work. During harvest, the farm employs around 20 people from the surrounding community, with cherries selectively picked as they ripen.

The coffee is pulped and dry-fermented for 12–24 hours before being washed and graded with fresh water, then slowly dried on raised beds for up to three weeks. This AA lot is a beautiful expression of Kabumbu and Batian — full and layered, with white nectarine, pink grapefruit and ripe fig.
