What The Maillard Project say
Kigeyo Washing Station was established in 2005 in the Rutsiro District of Rwanda’s Western Province. It receives coffee from farmers in the neighbouring communities of Karambi and Buhimba and is operated by COOPAC, a Fair Trade–certified cooperative founded by Emmanuel Rwakagara in 2001.Located near Lake Kivu on the steep slopes of volcanic mountains, COOPAC began with 110 farmers and has grown into a network supporting thousands of coffee producers. The cooperative combines a focus on high-quality coffee with a commitment to environmental care and community wellbeing.
Coffee-processing by-products are reused as fertiliser, helping keep waste out of Lake Kivu, while shade trees are distributed to farmers to reduce soil erosion. Agricultural advisors provide training in improved production methods, supporting farmers in maintaining productive and sustainable farms.COOPAC also contributes to local development through the construction of schools, healthcare clinics, roads and bridges. A livestock programme provides cows and goats to productive farmers, offering additional support for their livelihoods.
Bordering Lake Kivu and Nyungwe Forest, Rwanda’s Western Province offers a lush, tropical landscape. Its high elevations and soils, ranging from sandy ground to rich black humus, create favourable growing conditions that help local producers develop the region’s distinctive specialty coffees.
