What Locale Coffee Roasters say
tastes like lime, blackcurrant & brown sugar
This Fully Washed lot comes from Kii Coffee Factory. It’s everything we love about washed Kenyan filters – clean, expressive and endlessly drinkable. Think fresh lime acidity, juicy blackcurrant sweetness and a rich, lingering caramelised finish.
Kii Coffee Factory is located in Kirinyaga County, one of Kenya’s most celebrated coffee-growing regions. Established in 1968, Kii is the largest producer within the renowned Rungeto Farmers’ Co-operative Society, working with almost 4,000 smallholder farmers across the surrounding villages. Decades of experience, meticulous processing and exceptional growing conditions have helped cement Kii’s reputation as one of the country’s standout coffee factories.
Coffee is grown at around 1,619 metres above sea level in rich red volcanic soils under a moderate climate with reliable rainfall. Farmers predominantly cultivate the legendary SL28 and SL34 varietals, celebrated for their vibrant acidity, complexity and exceptional cup quality. Through ongoing agronomy programs, field visits and technical training, Rungeto supports growers with best-practice farming techniques while encouraging sustainable production across the region.
During harvest, ripe cherry is delivered to Kii and processed using Kenya’s traditional fully washed method. After pulping, the coffee is fermented overnight before being washed, soaked and carefully dried on raised African beds, with regular turning to ensure even drying and optimum quality. Investments in modern processing equipment, conditioning bins and water recirculation systems help produce the vibrant clarity and structure that have made Kenyan coffees famous around the world.
Beyond coffee production, the Rungeto Co-operative provides practical support to its members through access to pre-financing, farm inputs and emergency funding, while also operating a service station and yoghurt factory to help strengthen the local farming community.
