What Locale Coffee Roasters say
tastes like hibiscus, cranberry & lemongrass
Our latest washed Kenyan comes from Gakuyu-ini Factory in Kenya, run by Thirikwa Farmers’ Cooperative Society. Think hibiscus florals and brown sugar sweetness with notes of blackcurrant, cranberry and lemongrass. A modern take on Kenyan espresso – vibrant, sweet and seriously juicy.
Gakuyu-ini is located in Kirinyaga County, one of Kenya’s most celebrated coffee-growing regions. Built in 1982, the factory sits at around 1,567 metres above sea level and serves more than 1,000 smallholder farmers across the villages of Githiru, Gituba and Mukure. Affiliated with the Thirikwa Farmers’ Co-operative Society, Gakuyu-ini has earned a reputation for meticulous processing and consistently exceptional coffees.
Coffee here is grown in fertile red volcanic soils under cool temperatures and reliable rainfall, creating ideal conditions for producing the vibrant, expressive cup profiles Kenya is famous for. Farmers predominantly grow the classic SL28 and SL34 varietals, celebrated for their sparkling acidity, juicy fruit character and exceptional complexity. Through ongoing agronomy support and training, growers continue to refine farming practices while maintaining the high quality the region is known for.
Once harvested, ripe cherry is delivered to the factory the same day it’s picked. The coffee is fully washed, undergoing overnight fermentation before being washed, soaked and slowly dried on raised African beds. Careful turning throughout the drying process ensures even moisture and preserves the clarity, sweetness and vibrant acidity that define great Kenyan coffees.
