Ngogomo

Located in the beautiful hills of Muyinga in northeastern Burundi, the Ngogomo Washing Station works with thousands of smallholder farmers, each cultivating just a few hundred coffee trees.

The story of Ngogomo is a special one. Coffee production on the hill began with a local fisherman who turned to coffee farming after the fish disappeared from the stream that now supplies water to the washing station. Thanks to the exceptional quality of his cherries and the region's ideal growing conditions, many of his neighbours soon followed, establishing coffee farms of their own. Today, Ngogomo has grown into a thriving coffee community, with cherries delivered by surrounding farmers to the central washing station, where every step of processing is carefully managed.

Like many of Burundi's finest coffees, this lot is produced using the country's traditional fully washed process. After selective hand-picking, the cherries are delivered to the washing station where they are meticulously sorted, depulped, and fermented using fresh water from the nearby stream. The coffee is then washed, graded by density, and dried slowly on raised beds for several weeks. Every stage is closely monitored to preserve the coffee's remarkable clarity while showcasing the vibrant fruit character that Burundi is so well known for. Combined with Burundi's high elevations and cool climate, these careful processing methods create an exceptionally clean and expressive cup.

What first drew us to this coffee was its vibrant, fruit-forward profile. In the cup, you'll find notes of black cherry, pomegranate, and crisp red apple, balanced by a beautifully clean finish that makes this coffee a wonderful expression of the Muyinga region.
