What Commonfolk Coffee say
Cerrado Mineiro is the birthplace of Brazilian coffee, a region well known for its predictable seasons, flat plateaus, and defining Brazilian agriculture. Enter Danilo Barbosa, he and his father planted their first coffee trees in 1980 by hand in their small beginnings. His parents were servo attendants, saving enough money to purchase a small portion of land to make this happen.
Fast forward to the present. The Sucuri farm now spans more than 1,200 hectares, only 500 of which are used for coffee production; the other 700 are protected to preserve land and its ecosystems. Overall ,the Barbosa Family oversees over 2,000 hectares of land across Minas Gerais, with not just dedication to coffee, but to the land that grows it. Just because the production is vast doesn’t mean that each individual tree isn't cared for. With calculated growth with environmental preservation, Sucuri Farm is not a story of privilege, but a story of family ties and care for the land.
Crumble de Maçã e Amora (apple and blackberry crumble), is a testament to how even the largest of producers can produce stunning microlots, we were immediately transported to Sunday family dinners with sweet treats for dessert. With syrupy apple and blackcurrant cordial, but with sweet pudding or pastry vibes, sometimes the names make themselves. Thank you to Southland Merchants for connecting little old Commonfolk with goliaths like Sucuri Farm and the Barbosa family, regardless of scale, you can do your part for the planet we call home.
As with most Brazil lots, this coffee LOVES age, the longer you rest it the better. We found this recipe give the best all round flavour, but a more tradition 1:2, you're still going to have a good time.
