What Kai Coffee say
Introduction:
There's something quietly extraordinary about this coffee — and it starts long before it reaches your cup.
Deep in the Chimbu Highlands of Papua New Guinea, between the Kubor Range to the west and the Waghi River to the east, eight tribal communities across the Kerowagi and Gumine Districts have been growing coffee on smallholder farms for generations. The tribes behind this lot — Bari, Nauro, Enduka, Dom, Kumai, Dage, Gena, and Waugla — speak the Kuman language and live at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,000 metres in some of the most rugged and remote terrain on earth.
In 2003, these communities banded together and had their farms independently certified organic — a commitment to clean, chemical-free farming that remains in place today. While Kai Coffee is not organically certified, this coffee is grown entirely without synthetic inputs on certified organic farms.
The coffee cherries are hand pulped and washed in the pristine tributaries of the Waghi River, then dried and carried out by farmers — some of whom trek for up to a day on foot just to reach a passable road. From there, the parchment travels to the dry mill in Goroka before making its way to the Sunshine Coast.
The result is a sweet, delicate cup that tastes exactly like where it came from: clean mountain air, volcanic soil, and generations of care.
