Yonal Fernandez

Yonal Fernandez grows coffee at Finca La Mandarina, a small 1.5-hectare farm in El Vencedor, Colasay. He is also the brother of producer Merci Fernandez, continuing a family connection to this remote and increasingly exciting coffee-growing region of northern Peru.

Sitting between 1,720 and 1,750 metres above sea level, Yonal’s farm is planted entirely with Bourbon de Colasay. This locally recognised variety has adapted to the conditions of Colasay and is valued for its sweetness, structure and comforting cup profile. Its regional identity also offers a glimpse into the diversity of Peruvian coffee, where isolated growing areas and locally established varieties can produce coffees with a character all their own.

Yonal processes this coffee using the washed method before drying it on a covered patio. Coffee grows alongside plantain, corn, beans, cassava and other food crops across the farm.

Through our export partner, Origin Coffee Lab, we are able to connect with producers such as Yonal and share small, traceable lots that express both place and family.
