Lighthouse Blend

Our medium dark roasted blend coffee, for those who like a good well rounded coffee for their start to the day.

This Blend has origins from the America's in Costa Rica and Colombia as well a coffee from Papua New Guinian. This coffee blend is a of 100% Graded Arabica coffees picked and processed with care.

We roasted fresh every week on our small batch Has Garanti so it is always fresh when posted. This coffee blend has been a long time favorite among our customers, used in the Cafe' prior to the creation of the Whale Blend.

The Medium Dark roast imparts a mild to full bodied coffee.

- Espresso preparation produces a nice crema with a smooth delicious aftertaste. A good coffee for a Cafe' Latte or a long Black.

- Stovetop preparation makes a good medium bodied coffee that will rival any Cafe' bought coffee.

Montague Island Lighthouse

In 1873 the building of the lighthouse on Montague Is was first advocated. Designed by James Barnet was responsible for at least 15 major lightstations along the coast of New South Wales. Lighthouse construction commenced in 1878.

The unauthorised blasting by the building original contractor against instructions, damaged the large granite boulder selected for the lighthouse base. As a result the lighthouse was repositioned by several feet. Continued tardiness and difficulties the contractor eventual gave up the contract. A new tender was issued and in 1880 given to a second contractor. Resumption of construction proceeded quickly and the lighthouse was completed in late 1881.

Since 1881, visitors have landed here to inspect the Island’s renowned lighthouse and enjoy a tour of this scenic area which boasts colonies of seals and fairy penguins.

During the keepers’ era, all household and lighthouse stores had to be brought in by sea. The supplies were then brought up from the jetty to the lighthouse complex via a tramway.

The tower is constructed of locally hewn interlocking granite blocks which were quarried on the island.

Light Upgrades

- 1910 the light was upgraded to 250,000 CD,

- 1923 upgraded again to 357,000 CD,

- 1969 the power was raised to 1,000,000 CD with the conversion to electricity supplied by a diesel generator.

- 1986, automation of the lighthouse started with the original apparatus and lens was removed and replaced by a lightweight array of sealed beams, power of light was reduced to 120,000 CD supplied by an unattended array of solar panels.
