A warm and balanced expression of Huila.

This light espresso roast from Luis Anibal Calderón brings layered sweetness and soft acidity to the cup. Notes of brown sugar and toffee create a rich base, lifted by a bright mandarin citrus and the gentle fruitiness of dried apricot. A smooth hazelnut finish adds roundness and depth, making it a satisfying shot on its own or with milk.

Crafted for clarity and comfort in espresso and moka pot brewing, this roast showcases the soft complexity that defines both the Caturra variety and the highland terroir of Huila, Colombia.

The Grower: Luis Anibal Calderón

Luis, a second-generation coffee farmer from Acevedo, a town in the southern part of Huila, started working on his family’s farm at the tender age of 12. By the time he was 15, he had taken on the responsibility of tending to his own plot, showcasing the quiet determination that still defines his work.

In 2012, when commodity prices plummeted, Luis made a bold move. He transitioned into the specialty coffee industry, planting 5,000 Gesha trees and gradually expanding his focus to include exotic and high-quality varieties such as Bourbon, Pink Bourbon, Papayo, and this exceptional Caturra. Today, Finca Villa Betulia stands as a testament to craftsmanship, innovation, and resilience, producing traceable and expressive coffees that reflect both the soil and the soul of the region.

Located at an elevation between 1,500 and 1,600 meters above sea level, Villa Betulia benefits from the ideal conditions that contribute to the development of the dense, sweet, and clean flavour profiles characteristic of Huila coffees. The variety, Caturra, is a natural dwarf mutation of Bourbon, renowned for its balance, productivity, and exceptional cup quality.

Caturra is a natural dwarf mutation of Bourbon — valued for its balance, productivity, and cup quality. When grown with care and roasted light, it often expresses soft citrus, rounded sweetness, and a silky body. Luis’ lot is no exception.
