Description

If you've ever wondered what people mean when they bang on about "classic Kenyan coffee", this is the cup to point at.

Kii is one of three factories (Kii, Karimikui and Kiangoi) operated by the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society, which has been pulling cherries from this corner of Kirinyaga since the early 1950s. About 1,215 active members deliver to the co-op, most of them working a third of a hectare with roughly 400 trees apiece; small plots and generations of know-how. The co-op is led by an elected board of seven (two from each factory's catchment) and runs a long-term quality improvement project with marketing agent Sustainable Management Services Limited, aimed at lifting both cup score and yield.

The processing is textbook Kenyan washed. Cherries are sorted and depulped the day they are picked, fermented in tank overnight, washed clean in fresh river water, and then laid out on raised beds to slowly dry under that big Kenyan sun. The varietals SL28 and SL34 were originally selected by Scott Agricultural Labs back in the 1930s, and are the backbone of Kenyan flavour. They love this kind of altitude and the rich, red volcanic soil, and they're a big reason the region's coffees taste the way they do. Batian and Ruiru 11 are the newer, disease-resistant cultivars sitting alongside them.

What lands in your cup is the good stuff: ripe nectarine up front, a proper berry hit through the middle, and a complex cacao finish. Beautiful as filter, fun as a single origin espresso, since the nectarine really shows up in a short black. Honestly, if you want one coffee to remind you why you got into specialty in the first place, this is a strong pick.
