Karatina Factory is located in the Barichu locale, near Karatina town in the Nyeri County and part of the Barichu Farmer’s Cooperative Society, with about 1,450 smallholder members. The cherries are fermented in the traditional ‘double wash’ method with fresh river water from Ragati River and sundried on raised beds, with drying time anywhere between 7 and 15 days.

Nyeri is considered one of the best regions worldwide, and we love this AB selection from Barichu FCS. Smallholders deliver fresh cherry to the factory, and each lot is continuously sorted as they go through a traditional wet process. Expect layers of complex sweetness, dark berry florals, and a lifting, sparkling acidity to finish.

Area: Barichu Locale, Mathira Division, Nyeri County

Karatina Factory is located in the Barichu locale, near Karatina town in the Nyeri County and part of the Barichu Farmer’s Cooperative Society, with about 1,450 smallholder members. Karatina is where the original demonstration farm of the Barichu FCS is located, which now measures 5800 members across their 4 factories.

Coffee is selected from member products, and fermented in the traditional ‘double wash’ method with fresh river water from Ragati River and sundried on raised beds, with drying time anywhere between 7 and 15 days.

Gone are the days of pure SL28/SL34 selections; by using a mix of cultivars, most of the disease resistance from the new cultivars (Ruiru 11 and Batian in this case) help to ensure that farmers almost entirely remove their risk of leaf rust and coffee berry disease.
